What Is Usually A Better Option — Specialist Sites Or Miniature Sites?

The argument over whether mini sites or authority sites are a better option has been raging for some years now. However, Google seems to have the final say in the outcome of this type of debate. It seems that mini sites no longer enjoy the favor with Google they once had. In the last few algorithm changes, though, the larger content rich sites seemed to have gained favor over the mini sites. We can understand Google’s attitude about wanting to provide better search results for their visitors. Yet even a mini site can still offer positive results in your marketing efforts.

It’s commonly believed that mini sites have the advantage of bringing you profits in a shorter period of time. This technique can work in some cases. But we would caution you about permanently adopting the “quicker profits” attitude because that will cause you to miss out on many things. You could subdivide a niche into much smaller categories, each based on a few keywords. This would be the basis for a collection of mini sites, each one based on one of your keywords. This can be a good method to get high rankings for a number of sites in a short time, provided your keyword research was done right. If you do this, of course, you should be aware that Google is not a fan of mini sites.

Years ago it was possible to get a highly optimized minisite ranking very well, but that is not the case now in 2010. The attraction of minisites is they are easy and fast to build, plus the profit realized will be much faster than with an authority site. An authority site represents an investment of time and some money, so the mindset is totally different. That is exactly what it is, and it is an investment of your time and money. Long term investments have risk, too, and there is no guarantee that the stocks you buy today will have value in ten years. Even though it takes time to rank an authority site, that is ok because the owners are not in a rush to do it. Also, when an authority site is ranked at number one in a good market, it can be sold for a lot of money depending on things.

Mini sites can be effective in certain special situations. You should be able to rank well if you are marketing to different countries. If you then host your mini site in the country in which you are marketing, and SEO it for local search terms, you could get by with a mini site. As with any method, of course, you have to do careful testing, as results always vary based on elements such as competition and demand. While marketers commonly focus on Google and its policies, there are other search engines as well. Doing SEO for other search engines, such a Yahoo and Bing, as well as hundreds of smaller ones, can get you traffic too, even if they’re not as big as Google. If you’re looking to get good results from your mini sites, that’s one way to approach it. Because every marketing venture online is unique you should consider them all as unique. Every venture you pursue will be somewhat different than the last and you’ll need to change the way you market. So it is almost unwise to make a blanket statement that a mini or authority site is not a good idea for all markets and business applications.
